TITLE: Health Assistant
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Assist school nurse in day-to-day activities of health office. Provide assistance with health screening, health records, filing and checking student emergency cards, entering student information into data base and other related duties. Answer phone and greet visitors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education and/or experience equivalent to High School Diploma or GED
- State of Arizona Identity Verified (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Completion of District administered skills tests
- Valid Arizona Driver’s license (required) with reliable transportation (screening team)
- Current AZ DHS certification as a hearing screener, or must attend class to obtain certification upon hire

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist school nurse in administering first aid.
- Assess injuries and illnesses according to district guidelines and school nurse consultation.
- In the absence of the school nurse or an R.N. substitute, administer medications.
- As principal’s designee, assess illness and injury determining when emergency medical services need to be called.
- Follow appropriate universal precautions to prevent the spread of diseases.
- Maintain health records for all students.
- Review student health records for proper immunization documentation and emergency information.
- Contact parents to update immunization and emergency information.
- Assist with scheduling and conducting health, vision and hearing screenings; record screening results.
- Monitor students in health office; communicate appropriately with students, parent and teachers.
- Handle daily correspondence as directed.
- Answer phone, take messages and greet students, staff and parents at the health office.
- Maintain health office supplies and equipment, database, and Medicaid records.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- May assist with hearing and vision screenings at different schools within the District.
- Attend meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
- Knowledge of district policies and procedures affecting assigned work
- Knowledge of standard office practices and principles
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology
- Skill utilizing a personal computer and related software
- Skill administering hearing and vision screenings for students of varying ages and ability levels
- Skill using a variety of office equipment
- Skill communicating verbally and in writing
- Skill maintaining accurate records for compliance with district, federal, and state guidelines
- Ability to obtain and maintain Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI), CPR and First Aid certification
- Ability to obtain and/or maintain AZ DHS hearing screener certification

Potential exposure to infectious disease
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Repetitive motion and eye strain through extensive utilization of computer hardware and software
Bending, stooping and standing
May be required to lift up to 50lbs to assist students
May be required to lift, transport, and set up hearing and vision screening equipment and supplies with possible combined weight of 25 pounds
May need to lift and carry laptop computer
WORK YEAR: 189 to 191 Days
